Torque & Tech released this video on Tuesday, it all works just fine on our RSs as well. Just updated mine from 3.0 to 3.4. It's nice that it turns on the Climate Control stuff all w/o any FORScan involved.

He followed along with this page, which has all the files needed to be downloaded (both Nav and non-Nav versions). Take their advice, and have two flash drives on hand to switch from Step 1 to Step 2, that sure made things easy

Pics from the process on my car:

(No worries, this is the first USB looking for the files that are on the second USB)

It's the Mustang guys who are always on top of Sync updates more than anyone, so you'll see stuff like this since the file is for a Mustang

The actual splash screen once the upgrade is complete will be the Ford Performance one! The stang only shows up during the upgrade

At the end of the second USB doing its thing, you can see in the bottom right that the whole process took a little more than 30 mins

I did this about a month ago. The one issue I've run into is that I used an iPod to hold all my music and I have it connected to the USB port in the armrest. After the update, when playing anything on the iPod, the head unit does not display any info for the song that is playing. I've done a master reset, replaced the cable, reset the iPod, connected to the USB port near the shifter all to no effect. If I put a USB drive with music on it in the same port, it will display the info. My next step is going to see if I can replace the port itself with one of the newer USB and USB-C combo ones that are available now.

This makes me more excited to get an RS. When I was in sales, so many customers commented on how much faster, smoother and intuitive 3.4 is. Saw this on my news feed on the phone, glad it got posted here.

Excited for that type-c upgrade too.

i just went out for a short drive, i couldn't get that small screen on the cluster to show Nav for either Sync Nav or CarPlay :-(

I'll wait for the next opportunity to go out on a longer drive to see if it shows up.... Florida goes into "stay at home" status tonight though :-/

Have you enabled it using Forscan? I believe it's the IPC Navigation Repeater. Should be in the Forscan thread.

Carplay doesnt show anything in the cluster screen on sync 3.4 for me.

Sync nav does but I had it enabled thru Forscan long ago and it kept working after the update.

Anyone had the display not quite leveled after the update? i need to look into possible ways to calibrate the screen I guess!

From what I understand, I do not think Waze on Apple carplay can display on that screen yet. I know it works with Waze on Android Auto.

Try this if you have Waze on Android Auto and have enabled the repeater in Forscan. Open Waze on your phone and navigate to any destination. Connect your phone to the car and let it connect and start up Android Auto. Open Waze on your head unit and go for a short drive. I'm pretty sure that's how it worked for me the first time.

You might need to enable it on Forscan. I had to even on 3.4. Even then, it only works with the Ford nav and Google Maps, not Waze, so there's probably another setting I need to toggle somewhere.

For me, I'm perfectly aware FORScan was the way to enable to feature... but we are talking a very very recent release of Sync, things certainly may have changed!

As an example: now the climate controls are there and operational on the radio without any mucking around with FORScan

That's a great point. I can't actually confirm that just updating to Sync 3.4 will enable the Waze navigation directions on the small screen without enabling it first in Forscan.

It doesn’t. It’s only sync nav and Android Auto (any nav app not just Waze - since AA recently added support) in the instrument cluster and still need FORScan to enable it with 3.4 (if you enabled it before, it will still be there. If not need to add it).
We figured out the 3.4 update last summer. It’s not new.
You won’t get Waze or other CarPlay apps working with it. CarPlay doesn’t support that nor does applink.
Versions above 3.4.19200 will disable use of the reformat tool but you can downgrade to that version to do the whole process again if needed. Can never go back to v3.0.

V3.4.20021 has a bug when using a usb device where if using it it will load and show the fm radio on the next start up. Need to reselect the usb source to get it working fully. (v3.0 audio interface was better).

I am now able to (after 3.4 upgrade) have Waze display directions in that screen via Android Auto, not just Snyc navigation instructions. I'll try and get a video of it later today.

“V3.4.20021 has a bug when using a usb device where if using it it will load and show the fm radio on the next start up.”

I’ve run into this bug and it does not require a reboot, a simple switch to Sirius as a source and then right back to USB gets it lined backed up

takes 5 seconds and is more an annoyance than anything since it’s still doing it’s job playing off a flash drive

It’s a lot more than an annoyance.
If you load directly into CarPlay and the previous source was the usb flash drive, it will continue playing the usb Music sure. But when you press the button to go to next track it instead either changes the radio station and switches to fm source or does nothing.
So with CarPlay then you need to go to the ford icon and then through multiple menu taps to get the usb source working properly. Or press source button many many times - which leaves you at fm alt list rather than the fm1 list.
Also the next track physical button doesn’t change the track. The tune verticals buttons do instead.
Hopefully there is a new update to fix these soon

Also, Could just get these, I use them for my Pixel headset on my PC through USB-A. I've not tested if they work in the car with AA, but I could.

Tested: Using that with the USB-C cable that came with my Pixel 4 XL it worked. At least for the 1 minute test I did. The tray in the center console fits over this with mentioned cable no problem.

Will try this tomorrow. Really hoping it fixes my Spotify issue of it not showing all of my artists or playlists with my iphone under Carplay. Right now it only shows the top 20 or so.

Not getting my hopes up though. Seems like every time I update I hope it fixes it... but it never does. :(

That’s an Apple restriction and not to do with sync

This version of Sync is one of the worst Sync 3 updates. It's buggy and super laggy. I deal with these all day everyday as I sell Ford's so I generally have more experience than most dealing with the interfaces of all Ford's, not just my RS and every 2020 vehicle I've shown and driven it lags. Some lag less than others but my system in the RS hasn't had lag once.

I wouldn't waste my time with this laggy version. Plus in my opinion it's ugly as sin. A lot of my customers and employees think the same but that's just a subjective thought which really doesn't mean much.

Oh...so maybe I need to wait before moving forward on this one (as I know you can't go back). I was going to do it this weekend...nothing but time sitting at home thinking of things to do/modify. LOL

v3.4 is quicker than v3.0 and is not laggy on the RS.
The displays for audio is not as good and has smaller album art and less character space. Otherwise the upgrade is better.
V3.4.20021 has the usb source bug that’s annoying if you regularly use a usb drive. But a future update may fix it or use an earlier version.

v3.0.20045 (Apr 6th 2020) update is out in the wild for v3.0 installation.

Thanks for the vote of confidence @xd-data-ii on the version > That helps ease the risk as I know you are on top of it all the time. Appreciate the input and reply.
Seeing that you can't go back to v3.0, you would still move forward with v3.4 vs staying in v3?

#40 ·
Yeah I would. Mainly for the newer maps that can be installed (nav looked subjectively better in v3.0) and for something new. But I was the first to take the gamble and figure it all out here (original thread was removed) so I just figured I wanted to get something different and take the risk.
I haven’t bothered upgrading the apim firmware and don’t want to take that gamble and don’t see it adding anything useful.
v3.0 is fine to stick with anyway if you are happy with it and the look. v3.4 doesn’t add anything noteworthy extra. (Climate controls and nav repeater in cluster can be added by FORScan with v3.0).
I wanted custom backgrounds but you can’t add your own backgrounds and with the few selectable ones the defaults are the best. So that was a dud hope.
Latest v3.0 updates corrected the CarPlay speedometer inaccuracies so that is fixed on both versions.
If you use android auto the navigation info can be in the instrument cluster with v3.4 - but not sure if the latest v3.0 version added this too.

I also find it more responsive than version 3.0

One big huge con I discovered a few weeks back though: using a flash drive for a primary music source (something I do), the "Browse/Search" feature is now locked out when the car is moving. It didn't do that in 3.0 :-( Super annoying.

@xd-data-ii Thanks for the additional info.

Side note: what am I missing with your "how to" thread being removed? Whats the reasoning behind that? Some kind of legal thing thing or copyright deal?
I presume so. I guess Ford or someone got them to take down the discussion and info last summer. I’m surprised this and all the other threads with the same are still here but I guess the info spread to other forums and was on other sites that there’s no point in censoring more.
