There is a trick to installing these vband clamps even the high quality aftermarket types shown as a replacement for the standard one. I have been using these same designed aftermarket types on aircraft engine and aircraft system bleed ducting for 40 years and the process is as follows.
Smear some hi temp grease on the inside V section of the clamp and torque it up to a reasonable tension. Then tap around the clamp perimeter with a soft faced hammer and retighten. repeat the process until the clamp nut wont tighten any further. This relieves the friction on the faces of the V section and allows the wedging action to pull the faces together.
It will of course burn off the high temp grease in the first few minutes. I've even used WD40 to the same effect.
The lubrication aspect isnt, ahem legal for aircraft certification but the tapping the perimeter sure is and even without the lube helps a lot to get a good seal.
This process should also work for the std clamp.

Awesome. Thanks

Anyone have any luck replacing the clamp? I have a leak coming from my old clamp after I took it off to see if there was something wrong with my ETS exhaust. I've ordered 3 replacements just in case (one for future downpipe replacement). Hopefully they'll come in before the week is over so my exhaust will quit sounding like it's farting when it backfires

No luck. I just bought a few extras and swap whenever I do anything with my exhaust setup.

Changing the clamp didn't help you? Is it still leaking?

I spent a few minutes shopping for a new/better v-clamp in anticipation of getting a downpipe for my car.

Cobb Tuning has this one ($10 + $7 to ship), looks a lot like the factory one, but I can't quite tell for sure w/o seeing the other side of it:

Here is the stock one, part # E1GZ-5A215-A on Tascaparts, as I type this there are a few eBay sellers selling this OEM part as weell

The thread starter posted that great/secure looking alternative to the OEM one, pretty sure these are them, I'm not sure if 2.75" or 3" ones would be needed through

I don't think the second style clamp will work with our vband. The flanges are much different, and ours uses a gasket.
Yes I think you are right. I used these for 40 years on jet aircraft and dont think they will fit although I havent tried it myself. Be great if they did.

I don't recall a gasket?

So my friend and I learned the hard way on the down pipe install from a few weeks back that this V-clamp better be replaced during install!

The metal/crush/bend gasket stays behind on old down pipe and is totally not reusable. He picked up a new OEM one for $15 at a local dealer and it took us 30 mins to get it on there with most of that time being exhaust cool down period.

I know i know, that's a "no duh" from anyone who has ever installed a down pipe before. I know I reused my v-clamp when we put my exhaust on since that side of the clamp doesn't get left behind and it's been perfectly fine

Only ever having used v-bands in VWs, I assumed the teeth were part of the downpipe. Guess I have something else to fix when I get my car back. :mad-new:

Interesting...so, I wonder if instructions for aftermarket DPs give direction on getting a new OEM clamp. I know my Scorpion didn't stipulate that. And I have no leaks...or at least no tell-tale soot marks which are indicative of exhaust leakage.

My Scorpion downpipe leaks now after the clamp has been on and off a few times. I did not run a gasket for almost a year. I tried to put a new one on but couldn’t get it to clamp down. Going to give it another shot tomorrow using the recommendation of the OP.

I'm about to do my exhaust this weekend. I just ordered a new clamp based on this thread, but by the picture the metal gasket with the teeth needs to be taken off since the new clamp will come with one?

Yep!

But with that said, if you are only doing exhaust and the stock downpipe is staying in place, you shouldn't need to replace this clamp as it's the metal tabs that are the issue only when trying to reuse them (which doesn't work too well)

So my friend's RS above car was downpipe + exhaust and needed the part, my car I've only done exhaust (with OEM downpipe) and didn't need to replace the clamp.

I hope that helps

I thought this part was always supposed to be replaced. I installed my V2X and used the stock clamp, and it's noticeably leaking. Just ordered a replacement the other day since I was ordering other parts from tasca.

.

On my car I have no leak (stock DP > stock clamp > MBRP Black exhaust)

I've been involved in a few installs thus far and one thing that always seems to be true is "the clamp isn't as tight as it needs to be"
