This deserves a separate thread and discussion:

Says it fits the RS 4WD gearbox: https://shop.quaife.co.uk/ford-focus...ential-gearkit

@RocketRS brought this up, so I did a little digging. What a nugget!

**Coming soon**

Key features of the QKE46Z:

  • Compatible with both ST250 2WD and RS 4WD gearboxes
  • Gearkit reuses original bellhousing from donor gearbox
  • Drum style shift mechanism for fast, reliable gear changes
  • Retains OEM clutch, differential, driveshafts and mounts
  • Optional Quaife ATB differential
  • Strengthened outer casing
  • 5 wider than standard gears for additional strength
  • Choice of straight cut or helical gear ratios, and 1 straight cut & 2 helical final drive options
  • New generation of gearchange mechanism allows fitment into front or rear wheel drive configurations
  • Compatible with flat shift systems
  • Includes oil temprature sensor
  • Supplied with either a manual lever and cable or air actuator for paddleshift

I suspect it will be PRICEY.

I have used a number of dog boxes over the years since the mid 80's, have used ALL of them on the street and not a problem, you don't have to double clutch every change, you just have to be sure with you gear slection, not abusive, just firm. My current dog box is a Quaife 60G sequential with very close gears, it's a joy to use, the shifts are fantastic, I've had it for 3 years behind a turbocharged 4AGE 20 valve engine and have had no problems, it is very sweet to use. I use a Geartronics moducle for flat shifting running it in close loop to make sure ignition is not re-instated before next gear is home. I can drive it on the street very easily, yes it's a bit noisey but you just can't daydream when it comes time for gear shifts but by the same token it's not hard to change either, some people have this impression you have to be very harsh and aggressive when changing with a dog box, not true, just firm.

It's amazing how much a close ratio gear set can alter a car, it's been a must do to every circuit car I've owned. With the 60G even on lower rpm upshifts, the gears are so close it's just always on it, I love it, when I rev it out, it's just on it, it's amazing.

The first close gear set I ever bought was back in the 80's and was used in an RX3 Mazda coupe I had at the time, it was a 1-2 kit and changed the ratios from 3.380, 2.002, 1.38, 1.00 using 4.88 CWP to 2.33, 1.77, 1.38 and 1.00 using the gear set with a 4.88 CWP and it was dramatic how much better the car was, engine was 13B peripheral port.

The Quaife 60G for my AE86 was quite expensive, but after the first session using it, was worth every cent.

Yay! Fellow dog boxer!

You're cheating with your fancy geartronicx mojo. Though it sounds like fun!

I'll pull back a little though. You're right. To a wise and mechanically sympathetic driver, a dog box is streetable. But it's not as easy to street as a normal synchro box.

LOL, yeah using the electronics is a bit of a cheat, but using a closed loop system reduces dog damage and sounds cool as. I used to build engines for a class of space frame cars that used FT Hewland trans-axs, recently at the track a number of older cashed up gentlemen have bought vehicles with DG and FT Hewlands and cannot get their heads around shifting them, I said to the guy with the FT if he couldn't shift that he should give it away as the FT was the darling box, easy to shift, the guy with the DG couldn't shift it, I drove it and no problems, I think part of his problem was the noise it made scared him!

I hope a built stock trans can hold enough torque to not require this. I don't desire the gear whine nor the lack of synchros.

I had to look up Samsonas. I guess I'm farther from things than I thought.

Very impressive bit of kit. And when combined with modern tech... yeah, I get it. Very awesome! And the tech may even make such a combo streetable. As it passes off some of trickier foot work to Hall2000.

Am I reading that link right, it's for the Mk2 and not Mk3? The post from 12hrs ago mentions only the Mk2.

Post from August 6 at 3:08 AM· mentions both Mk2 and Mk3?

Quaife Engineering sequential gearboxes are on the way for both Mk2 Focus RS and Mk3 Focus RS. These units are direct replacements for your OE gearbox and utilise the OE bell-housing.
A seamless install and integration solution is in development currently... so then all you’ll need is a lot more power to enjoy it with - which we can assist you with too!

Check out all those straight cut gears, thats going to be way too noisy for a daily driver. Although if you upgrade to one of those massive sound systems it may be ok.

Ciao

PPG is also supposed to release one this year. I was approached to test one on my car with additional software for clutchless upshifts and rev matching clutchless downshifts. Just waiting on them to finish...

Digging this old thread up again after watching a number of rally cars on YouTube, I can't help think the best way to get a performance enhancement, albeit at a potentially significant cost is to opt for this if readily available. Even the standard factory power output of the RS is still very impressive when compared to 1980's rally cars which were incredibly fast with perhaps not much more power than the RS. Although weight was also a significant contributor, but the old school stick shift does hamper things, as does the dosage of the turbo in lower gears. If you came to a hairpin and had to drop to second, the RS's current arrangement will give you precious little boost in second which doesn't help and then you have to trawl through the gears the old fashioned way. If you could sort these two things out it would make for a quantum leap in response and performance. The only question though is at what cost........

Mountune also added an extra tax of $1k to their stage 1 trans. Price went from $4.5k to $5.5k.
They must’ve thought their price was too close to the Ford price for the 18 trans w/LSD.

Snox, if you don't mind me asking what was your final ET with just the meth and downpipe? I remember you were into the mid 12's with just the Livernoise 93 tune, you installed the meth and smoked the clutch, then you went big turbo. Did you ever get a solid ET with the new clutch but before the turbo swap? Power wise, that seemed like the sweet spot I wanted to be in.

On the other hand, Mountune just posted a youtube vid where they used this transmission to get an almost 11 flat ET. I really wanted to see them scrape the 10's.

There are a couple of folks who have hit high 11's with the stock turbo. The mountune video is on street tires with a full interior. I'm sure if we had anyone go full drag and strip everything down, we'd get much lower times. It appears everyone who goes high HP sticks to the road courses.
