RS fuel tank capacity increased?

so i was talking with a friend about gas tak capacity on my RS. it sure seems like it's 45 or 46L based on how much fuel i put in, how many KM to empty on the HUD, and the avg fuel consumption (11L/100km)
so i went and looked at ford.ca and came across this under Focus capacities:

Capacities: Fuel
Sedan (L) - 46.9
Hatch (L) - 46.9
Electric Hatch (L) - n/a
ST Hatch (L) - 46.9
RS Hatch (L) - 52.6

(edited because pasting tables sucks)
Is this just hogwash or what? or is Empty really meaning I've got ~5L left to limp to a gas station?
It sure doesn't seem to add up to what goes into my tank per the above.

The RS has always had the bigger tank. The regular Focus tank doesn't fit due to the driveshaft. The fuel gauge is very conservative too.

All I know is that when my warning light comes on and says 10mi left, I gotta get gas soon. I let it go down to 4mi left once and car took 13gal (49L). So I don't think there's too much of a safety reserve.

I've gotten 13.1 with no top-off into the tank and I didn't run out of gas prior...seems reasonable it could hold 14 gallons/52.6 liters

I wonder if they re-calibrated the trip computer for the larger fuel tank?
When fully topped off, 2 clicks of the pump with 10 sec. pause, how many miles, does the computer say it will go on that tank? (what is your current MPG in the computer)?

From the Manual:

Item Capacity
Engine oil fill capacity including the oil filter. 5.4 L
Engine oil fill capacity excluding the oil filter. 5.1 L
Engine coolant fill capacity. 9.2 L
Manual transmission fluid fill capacity. 1.9 L
Rear drive unit fill capacity. 890 ml
Fuel tank fill capacity. 52 L

Though I can't remember putting in more than 12 gallons... hmmm

I recently ran my RS for 5-6 miles after the indicator read "0 miles to empty," and when I filled up it took 12.67 gallons/48 liters (with no top-off). I wouldn't doubt for a second that there was another gallon in the tank.

My anecdotal data is consistent with a 52 liter (13.7 gallon) tank. I usually fill up with a quarter left on the gage and put in about 10-10.5 gallons. Once ran it down to 25 miles to empty on the trip computer and I think put in 12.2 gallons, so 25 miles left seems about right as my average tends to be around 18 mpg. That would be a shade less than a gallon and a half left which puts the total at 13.7 gallons or 52 liters.

I guess in short my personal experience has not lead me to doubt 52 liters is the capacity, but I do wish it was a bit bigger regardless of what the specified volume is in publications.

In the interest of science I put a fuel can in the trunk and drove until I ran out of gas. I asked @FordService to confirm the capacity and they directed me to my dealer and the manual I was already quoting :disappointed:. A good thing to mention is my car didn't come with the fuel funnel it is supposed to have and I had to order one before I could conduct the test. I would recommend you check to see if yours is missing.

I probably could have gone further on a flat road, and less acceleration. It stopped accelerating up a slight incline I pulled onto the shoulder and let it run. It struggled to idle then died. I attempted to restart it and it didn't start. It was definitely unable to pick up fuel.

I made it about 30 miles past zero. Total fill up including gas can was 13.7 gallons. The most I'd put in before was 12.2 gallons and that was around zero miles with the needle on E.

Either Ford realized the RS can slosh alot of fuel causing stalling issues when low or they never adjusted the RS capacity to reflect the larger tank.

I typically fill up with a 1/4 tank of fuel left, but it is nice to know how much is really in the tank for those "can I make it" moments.

Anyone know if the fuel minder that comes on at 50 miles can be disabled?

I saw this thread and got excited. The current tank is wayyyy too small and I thought someone came up with a larger alternative. Bummer

I don't see any 13.7s so I win. It's good to know the true capacity of the tank, but doesn't really change anything for me. I don't plan on going that low on fuel again.

52 liters is 13.737 gallons.

You guys might want to be careful running your tanks consistently low...

Could a "sticking" purge valve cause the fuel tank to collapse? - Ford Focus Forum, Ford Focus ST Forum, Ford Focus RS Forum

There was a really good link about what I say below on FocusFanatics, but I'm not finding it (thought I bookmarked it).

My wife's 2013 Focus SE tossed CEL code P144A Evaps purge valve not operating properly. I'm not certain for the RS, but even though the purge valve is emissions, it is an emissions component not covered under warranty. It is known to fail under continued running of the fuel tank low. From there it, IIRC, can foul the carbon canister and screw with the pressurization of the fuel tank causing it to deform. If this happens it's a $2300-2500 repair. My wife and I rarely take our vehicles to empty, but do so semi-regularly to to "clear the tank". I'll usually do so around 20-30K on my ranger and then replace the fuel filter shortly after filling back to full. In our case we had a mostly full tank when the CEL popped and thankfully it was only the purge valve that needed repair - at the tune of $443.48. An early symptom is markedly reduce mileage. In our case the vehicle was rough on rpm in 1st and 2nd gears, randomly stalled, and we got crap mileage vs her average 34-36 mpg before CEL threw.

FWIW running to empty is also terrible for yiur fuel pump. It is cooled by sitting in the gas in the tank. No gas. No cooling.

I can add another run past '0' by almost a 1km (slight uphill) and put 47.7l on a all but level station driveway to a minor top-off.
Running average indicated at about 10.4l/100km.

I'll be working on a safe buffer of 30km on light throttle...'0' is conservative.
