The other day I popped my hood to add more windshield washer fluid and noticed that mice/rats had been inside eating away at the liner on the hood itself.

I've cleaned the mess up and thankfully they didn't chew on any of the wires.

As you can imagine the liner looks like ass now.

Is there any downside of keeping this off the car?

They're like small dogs now lol

Without it in place the top of your air box wont be sealed when the hood is closed.
Noticed that this morning when I was driving. The intake was a lot more audible

Time to find another place to park/garage the ride ASAP.

Some of the worst electrical gremlins can stem from mice damaging wiring; often times in places you can't see until you start to trace the entire length of wire and remove panels - water/flood damage is right up there as well IMHO.
Not really an option here in the city. Parking pad or street parking only.

I found a large mouse nest on top of the cabin filter of my Mazda 6. I only discovered it when they all died in there. I turned on the fan one morning and the car filled with the smell of death....really disgusting!!! Luckily they didn't chew any wires. Probably a good idea to investigate that area .

Bizarre, wouldn't think that was tasty stuff. I opened my hood last month and there was an adult grey squirrel looking at me, then he wiggled down the left side of the motor and disappeared. No apparent damage.

A while ago I discovered a small amount of damage to the liner on my car. whoever took a bite, a rat or a weird mechanic, probably realized it didn't taste like food and stopped eating.

I still don't understand why they would eat this stuff, how does this even remotely resemble any food item to them? this is just some dry fabric, no? I reckon a flipping banana peel would taste better and be more nutritious than this, but they choose to munch on this stuff... I can't understand these little animals...

thinking about taping some nuts onto the liner so whoever finds its way in there can just eat the nuts and leave my liner alone...

They aren't eating it, they are tearing bits of it out to use for a nest. The real question is where in the OPs car is that nest hiding.......

Had the same issue just before it started getting cold out.

Rat ate my hood liner and the fender well sound dampening stuffing. I went to grab a coffee one day and noticed stuffing all over my driveway, popped the hood and the rat was sitting in his nest and stood up and looked up at me then took off.

Ever since then I've used bounce sheets in my engine bay and throughout the car as well as daily traps by the wheel wells. Highly recommend stuffing the pockets on each side of your engine bay where the dampening stuffing is, happened twice now once on my ST and now my RS.

Also recommend NOT using the heater block as you're just asking for mice/rats.

Oh those little mother trucker's.....good point about the block heater!! Luckily I took the engine cover and sound proofing out on day one of ownership,
but I will check my fender's. :encouragement:

You do mean car belts ....right?

Parents have been dealing with mice chewing up their cars the past few weeks and we're in cali....

For anyone else with the issue, those ultrasonic deterrents work REALLY well to keep rodents away.

I keep the FiST and RS in the garage during winter and have to make sure I leave the hoods up. I Also take the plastic cover off the top of the engines and just stand them up. Not really an option for some people.

I had mice make a small nest out of the stuff that pads the underside of the plastic engine cover. They also cut through an inconveniently placed vacuum hose, which was really the more annoying problem. Tech caught the damage during the recall last year.
@I25 I'm in Baltimore also. You have a black RS - were you parked in Fells Point one morning last week?

Got battery warning light last month, turned out to be wire from alternator chewed threw by some kind of rodent. Wires now use sou based insulation. Might as well put peanut butter on them. It chewed through the split loom then cut two of the three wires. Endoscope picture attached, cut two of the three wires. $400 damage NOT covered by warranty, insurance covered though. Many class action lawsuits with many car manufacturers on this. Installed ultrasonic device meant for auto.....

Which preventive ultra sonic device are you using? You mentioned it's for auto specific? Let's get information out so other people can benefit from our mistakes.

Just use preventative measures mentioned in this thread.

Sure the manufacturer uses attractive wire looms and has the taste of gold for animals, this can be controlled though. I own a 2018 LE and was devastated to find out this happened to me TWICE but I should have learned my lesson the first time. It's just knowledge at this point, no one is expected to know if/when this will happen to them, so If you live in area that's known to be infested use the following advice and save yourself 150$ worth of hoodliner.

I live on a freaking orchard, my area is filled with mice/rats.

Stuff your front quarter panel gaps I use shop paper towels, its the giant gap by your hood hinges that go down into your wheel wells between the panels. If you need an image message me I'll give you a diary. mice/rats go in this pocket and pull the wheel liner out, happened twice with me.

- bounce sheets throughout the car, including engine bay ( my go to )
- ivory soap around your car, the soap bars cut into small chunks
- ultra sonic devices
- poison
- traps
- sage the **** out of your car lol

That alone should prevent anything for rodent worries. Trust me I've tried it all. Since I started using bounce sheets I've been 6 months free or rodents, even put the myths to the test and used my engine block heater for 2 months straight, not a single rodent in sight.
