Can anyone recommend a good GPS/Satellite theft tracker? My insurance company will give a worthwhile discount if I have one, but I know nothing about them.

Guess it's a good thing my dealer install lojac for me and baked the cost in my OTD price. I doubt you even get a 25$/mo discount from your insurance for having it on your car.

Problem with LoJack is it works on radio waves, not satellite data. It's really hard to track unless it is standing still. Also difficult to find if parked in a cement or steel parking structure. Of course GPS will bounce in the right circumstances too, so they both have their disadvantages. At least LoJack works better once your car is stationary.

I'm currently using a dongle called the Automatic Pro which comes with an unlimited subscription for 5 years and has some other features too. The initial cost is more than any of the strictly GPS tracking dongles, but it works out to be a lot less without the monthly subscription fees. It has a really nicely designed mobile app too, and you can do some other stuff with it which I haven't really found useful. There's also a cheaper version but I think you have to be connected to it via Bluetooth, so there's no real-time tracking.

Not sure if you already purchased anything yet but I got a 1-way viper alarm system and added the viper smart start gps module which allows me to remote lock/unlock my car and set speed limit/movement alerts and track my car on my phone.
I paid 120 for the 1-way alarm and 175 for the smart start module (both with installation) and it's a 100 per year service. Or you can sign up for 3 years and it's less. I opted for yearly.
I've been extremely happy. My only regret is not getting a 2-way alarm since the smart start module depends on a cellular network so there is a slight delay (~5 seconds) in locking/unlocking your car or receiving alerts.
Side note, I initially went to Best Buy to see what they would charge for the alarm with installation and its was around 750 for a 2 way viper alarm, so I didn't even bother asking about adding the smart start module.

This uses cheap phone tech, to transmit the gps coords. also. If it goes out of range it does not work.

You could either get a remote start with tracking abilities which would allow you start/stop, lock/unlock from your phone or fob or use. DRONE Mobile piece hardwire de for tracking only.

Works on cell network which means the DR-3400 is running on Verizon and DR-3100 is ATT both function the same but coverage would vary depending on where you live.

I'm currently running a Compustar setup that allows me to start it from a 3mile remote or my phone. Also I have the alarm
Feature turned on which gives me feedback if the car locked/unlocked aswell as if someone triggered the alarm and which zone.

Hope this helps.

Depends on what you choose and I'm not sure if they are the same in Canada. It's $120 for 1yr, $220 for 2yrs or $300 for 3yrs here in the states and depending which DRONE mobile module you choose it runs ok either Verizon or ATT.

I have the 3mile remote but that's just overkill considering the phone has notification triggers and controls just as much as the remote does but it's cool to have if you're worried about cellphone reception and still want to know what's going on with your car.
