Clearly from back in the 80's, I was a Ford hot hatch fan even then, with my 1986 Escort GT...

...I eventually put an Ansa exhaust, MSW wheels, and some lowering springs on it. (Ate up the tie rod ends, though.)
My mom still had her 1983 WV GTI, and the Escort couldn't hold a candle to it. The Escort's rear suspension gave some weird toe changes through its suspension travel, which made hard cornering really spooky. It also pitched around on its suspension more than my mon's car. It was cheaper - all I could afford at the time, so I have no complaints. It was reliable. Sold it in 1990 and bought a VW Corrado.
Great story, thanks for sharing.

I had a 1991 Lexus LS400. Heavy boat

I had a heavy boat from the 90s myself: a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix, in the supercharged GTP trim.

All of 240hp, 280 lb/ft of torque in a 3800+ pound car. It had 80k miles when I bought it, 120k when sold. The supercharger sounded great on the somewhat rare occasion I could hear it (almost always drowned out by a failing power steering pump  I got it replaced twice in 6 years and each one kept failing. The dealer I took it to closed down a few months after the last replacement, after losing a lawsuit...)

It definitely felt fast, though. The rear suspension was so softly sprung you couldn’t help being pinned to the seat when accelerating with any aggression. When combining that with the car being FWD and wearing low grip all-season Yokohamas, burnouts were...plentiful.

It was a quirky thing with a lot of character. I feel I enjoyed the experience overall. That said...I’ve never bought from GM again.
