[Salvage RS]

I recently was hit on my passenger side in my brand new RS. Damage is mainly to passenger doors, rear bumper, side curtain and side seat airbags, and passenger rear wheel, tire, and some mechanical parts behind it. My insurance company deemed a total loss because it is very expensive to fix being that parts are expensive, etc, etc (estimate was $26k to get it fully back to original condition). After the pay off amount insurance offered me they also give me the opportunity to buy it back with salvage title for the salvage value of $7 grand. Is there a market for parts on this car or would it be a complete pain in my ass and should I just let it go and pocket the additional 7k? ORRR should i slowly fix her back up and just drive around with no airbags and dented up body for a while because fixing the wheels components would allow it to be driveable. None of the driveline was damage other than knuckles, control arms, and some smaller parts behind rear wheel. Car only has 1 thousand miles so i feel like there is still some potential if not even to just sell it piece by piece (engine, trans, breaks, differentials, etc.) I would appreciate some input and thoughts from anyone who has an opinion. The accident was completely the other drivers fault. He blew through a stop sign while I was driving on a through street and T-boned me. He admitted fault. Anyways, feedback would be great. How mechanically inclined are you? Are you going to part out yourself and sell? I mean I can see over 7k worth of spare parts but it would take a significant effort to like pull the engine, etc.

I don't think there is 7 grand there personally. It's not like your pulling major aftermarket parts off, and the time involved is probably not worth the money unless you have a relatively open schedule. For someone like me, working 5 days a week plus rotating 5 section duty days, it just wouldn't be worth wrenching and attempting to sell all those parts off on my free time vice hanging with the wife and doing other, more enjoyable things.

Seems like a perfect base for a track day car build. On the other hand, if you had the patience to part it out you'd make 20k without too much effort but you'd have a slowly shrinking pile of parts for probably at least a year.

In Florida he can probably find an '79 Ford Fairmont wagon. Probably a bit tricky to mount the transverse engine but there is quite a bit of room there.

7k for a 40ish k car. Grab it. Fix the important bits(frame, suspension, make sure it aligns, etc.) with awesome aftermarket bits. Who cares how it looks. Just skin it with fiberglass bits instead of really fixing the cosmetics

Then cage it, toss in seats and other safety bits and never look back.

You could dial it in for auto cross or track days.... lol.. or pull the front axels and really go drifting. Ha!

That's exactly what I've been thinking would be fun if my RS was ever totaled, and I'd suspect relatively easy. Just need to find a cheap Transit Connect.

Honestly, if you have the money you should get it. A lot of parts for the RS are on backorder at Ford and lots of people are waiting for them. I'm sure you'd have no trouble selling a lot of the parts. Not everybody would want used stuff, but if its the quickest option, then a lot will. I had a used frame rail on my first Evo. I didn't want used stuff, but it meant I got my car a month or two sooner.

I love parting stuff and I would say its worth it, if you have the money to invest to that and enough to get replacement car. The wheels new are about 1800 new, so even if you get 50% Ford cost on 3 of them that is about $2,700 there back, and they are easy to remove. Front air damn is over $400 from Ford, so even at $200 (again 50% new cost) its a deal to someone wanting OEM parts. There are lots of one off parts on the RS, they cost money!

If you have the money/time/patience. Parting out the car might get you a very very good deal.

Fixing it for 2/3k (if possible) for a Fun weekend/autoX car is too a good option.

If you don't have the money or time, do not even think about it

For 7K I would get it, put the stuff in a base hatchback mk3 car, sell the stock drivetrain of that MK3 hatchback and start a good sleeper project.

But it comes really down to your situation. Do you have the space, time, tools, experience, etc.
