Spark plug threading problem

1754 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  mikael.fang
So I was changing the spark plugs on my rs and it seems like the cylinder threads are messed up on of the cylinders. I tried multiple plugs and none of them will go in. Any ideas on what I should do?

If you took the existing plugs out with no issues, the new ones will go in. Ensure you're threading in squarely by hand.
The old one didn't come out without any problems it felt like it was catching
just carefully feel it out by hand, sometimes the threads are gunked from neglect and it can be harder for those threads to find their way in. definitely dont force it or youll be in a world of hurt having to rethread the heads

How many miles since have the plugs been fitted? If its like 30,000mils or so then they can be dodgy to remove. I did the 75000 klm old plugs on the DD escape which was 15,000klms over the recommended and removing them was an uncomfortable experience. Won't leave them that long again. Modern plugs may be able to do 80,000K's but the plug bodies and threads don't like the removal process much.

Ciao
My plugs were a bear to get out the first time even at 2500 miles or so...felt like I needed a breaker bar. You should almost always be able to spin a right-hand thread counter-clockwise and feel it "seat" unless it's poorly machined and surely always you should be able to thread them in by hand. The wrench for torque is recommended once they are hand tight. This should index the electrode, toward the center of the cylinder vs the wall. (I need to check this on my 2nd head to see how well its machined and if you can accurately index the plugs as I described, but in theory that should be achieved via that final torque if they set it up correctly).
⬆⬆⬆ What they said. Changed mine with 6K. It was, in a word, horrible.
Patience and persistence. Gentle strength.
Gee! All that was/is really encouraging! Hope the dealership doesn't have too much trouble when they change mine (mind you; I've always changed my own plugs going back to 1970!)! ;)
The squeaking I get when removing the plugs always makes me nervous. But I never really have an issue threading in the new ones. Just turn counterclockwise till I hear/feel it catch and hand tighten. Then just torque it down with the torque wrench.

Was the head dead cold when you removed them? Will the old plugs thread back in by hand?
I will leave the change to Ford this tuesday... just beacuse I want to have a warranty if something happens during the change. I dont want to screw it up myself.
