Hi guys and girls,

does anyone have any idea wtf is disintegrating on the backend of my car?
Video: https://drive.google.com/open?id=16HFgs1FptwgVAjkJ3g-Jq0IFHkh4N8ZX

It was just there after I got out of the car after a drive, no idea if it fell off when I got out of the parking space or when I parked it.

Looks like metal that is completely rusted through, as in, if you touch it it falls apart. I couldn't get under it to check yet, it looks like something that was remotely circular. Brakes were done at a Ford Dealership before i bought the car :/ I'll change the winter tires in the next days sometime but any input beforehand as to what I should check would be appreciated because that **** just weirds me the **** out. Car drives, brakes, etc. flawlessly btw

Best Regards,
Gerg

Hard to tell from the video but thin sheets of rusty-looking metal, generally circular... seems like a layer of brake pad or rotor? Are you using the car regularly, or did you have flash rust built up on the rotors from a recent wash or something? I don't think I've seen this before - I'd pull the rear wheels and check out the brakes before driving further.

Never seen anything like this either. I am using the car 2-3 times a week and i usually drive a small round after washing it so it dries out a tad. My first guess was also rotors but i can't imagine where those bits would come from and they are supposed to be like half a year old so I'd be shocked if they build enough rust from a couple of washes to just fall off the car bit by bit.
I will try to pull the wheels and look at them closer tomorrow

New rotors have black paint around the outer circumference quite often. That **** flakes right off so it might just be that. I see it every day in the shop I work at but usually not until a few thousand km on them

Well on the drivers side the material is in line with the tire and on the pax side its in a line inboard of the tire. Tell us about the parking space you use, anyone else have access to it?

@lucky phil, the parking space is my private one, no one else uses it.

I've changed the tires today and made a video will upload it later, just on the run atm so I don't have the time. I havent seen anything wrong with the brakes.

@4rd SVT & 320icar

Both the rotor and the suspension components are quite rusty, so one of you might be right there, I think I'll clean that **** up and seal / repaint it next summer when the summer tires are going back on, this is bugging me. I didn't find any place where the paint looked like it was freshly missing though :/

thanks for all the replies guys!

Personally I think someone else has used the entry to your parking space to manoeuvre their car and they have dropped this stuff there. The larger pieces at the end of the video seem semi circular and looks like something that had dried on the sidewall of the tires and then dislodged when the tires rotated.

The rear rotor has an inner lip on the hub mounting face inward side which will store tremendous amounts of brake debris. This debris will oyster later build with use and this layering cake with fall out. If you have ever swapped Focusmk3 ST/RS rotors they all have this. When you remove them the debris will be all over the shop floor in large flake/dust.

I think @Shimmer is the winner here, rotors were not swapped only pads when it was in service with the previous owner, so everything is pretty dirty and rust caked and since it literally disintegrates on touch I think brake debris could be it. I will take everything apart back there come summer and clean up / repaint it. The first owner drove it in Austria a lot during the winter and I think he never bothered with washing the salty snow off.

Excuse my heavy breathing and socks with sandals XD
