Rev Limit Cuts Engine at 120 mph

4782 Views 92 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  20focusstdriver17
I was on a road trip in my RS thru desert land. I opened-it-up a few times, and each time the rev limiter cut in at 120 mph. Elevation was about 4,000 ft. I expected to be able to go faster than 120 mph!

Any thoughts?

How pathetic ..
You came here saying you have a 100% stock RS, in perfect working order, and it redlines at 120MPH in 6th gear. Something you said is wrong, no way all conditions you have are true. You didn't mention the redline in 6th gear until after several other plausible suggestions. If you don't want to listen to every other owner that knows you have something wrong with your assumption, move on.

Is my math too advanced for you? Every factory RS out there is capable of exceeding 160mph in 6th gear. Top speed is only achieved in 6th gear. And the only gears capable of achieving 120mph are 4th, 5th, and 6th gear. So if you are at or near engine redline, which is 6700rpm (normally 6500rpm) then that means you were in 4th gear. 5th gear would put engine RPM below 5500rpm, and 6th gear even lower.

You've been given several suggestions. You ASKED for them.

Check the ford My Key status, you'll find instructions in the manual.

But short of being in the wrong gear, the only other way for engine RPM to approach Rev Limit at 120mph is either you were in 4th gear, or you have a slipping clutch. But honestly would show up long before 120mph. It is possible, but unlikely, that someone put a tune on the car that has a speed limiter.
Your math isn't too advanced, but your attitude is that of an asshole. Your conclusions are narrow-minded and faulty.

I’m sorry you are unhappy that 2+2=4. I will ask God to change the laws of Universe.

Based on your posts I can only assume that if there is nothing mechanically wrong, and your car has not been flashed the you might want to see about replacing the Driver unit, it’s clearly incapable of selecting the proper gear.

Hopefully, the dealer will solve the problem. I doubt I will report back here ... way too many idiotic losers.

Just saying, you came here to ask questions, then with the knowledge experienced people have to give, you shot it back in their faces like their help didn't matter and their experiences was invalid. How do you think this type of behavior would be received? This is why people are calling you out to be a troll. A good majority here know the car inside and out.

You've been overly defensive since damn near the beginning of this thread. Had you provided more info instead of being a grumpy old ****,
we probably wouldn't have just assumed you didn't know how to drive. Now we just assume you're an asshole.

Another asshole know-it-all.

I guess the dealer will have to charge him dyno time just to test since they can't easily legally test that issue any other way.

I cannot imagine asking the dealer to even investigate this... How do you ask for them to check this out so that you can exceed this 120mph on public roads? 🤨 I would imagine even most track day tracks are not high speed, it is more about acceleration, brake, acceleration, brake, etc.

Ok guys I’m not gonna read this whole thread, but OP says he was in 6th and was at redline and only did 120mph. regardless of what key or a valet mode, the car has gearing and logic would dictate either

1. The OP is lying
2. The OP is just wrong
3. His clutch is slipping so bad that it allowed the car to bypass the actual gear ratios

It would depend on the track. I know at ViR I can get over 120MPH on either straight, should be able on RA too (on "back straight" between turn 7 and 10A), NCCAR I can reach it, but not sure it would be there long enough to really diagnose much of anything. But if you are diagnosing an issue the dyno is a way safer place for testing.

Remember, he didn't say anything about redline at the point that anyone was suggesting a possible key/valet mode issue. Once that was brought to light, those ideas were out the window as there is some mechanical issue (something preventing the engine RPMs from reaching the tires through the expected ratios) or an electrical issue (causing the car to think it's at a higher RPM or the speed is way slower than it actually is).

@ControlNode you’re right, but this is what I’m referencing

I was in 6th gear. As I watched digital speedo I saw the rpms qaapproach redline and the engine c

Uhm, the OP is an idiot. Reminds me of the stupid f*cks on the honduh forums during The Forum Wars back a decade ago. Well, before I was banned. The title of this thread says “rev limiter” at 120 mph” not some ambiguous rpm, the rev limiter, which is a simple thing to discern. Close the thread and move on.

More likely they will solve it and you still won’t report back because it is one of the many things we have said it could be.
So rather than bruise your own ego, you will carry on believing we are a holes.
Truth is what is stated is the only real options you have for why it won’t go past 120
. Maybe bring up those things to the dealer to get them started.
You seem to be asking the same question and getting mad when all the same and only logical answers are given.
But please respond to what the dealer finds out if for no other reason as to prove us all wrong.
I will be the first to say I was wrong if I am wrong.
