Ok guys so I am 100% ready to buy an RS, I rented one off Turo for 2 days and absolutely loved it.

The main concern here is, I feel I really want a 2018 but its hard to find a unmodded one. I could easily buy a 2017 NB with low mileage. Do you guys believe it would be worth the wait for a proper 2018?
basically this boils down to paying and waiting more for the LSD and revised suspension. Any thoughts? Or general buying tips?

What are your goals? A 2018 would be nice, but honestly I'm considering putting a LSD in when I need a new clutch. The "revised" suspension is $400 in parts, and there are a ton of coilover options for most budgets if you want more. I'd save the cash on the 2018 and grab a clean 2017.

Do you care about the color? If yes for red, then you're obviously stuck

Make sure to get a service history and ask where the HG was fixed, and bounce the dealer name off the post-HG issues thread to see if anyone has had issues there.

The biggest selling point for the '18 for me was not having the head gasket replaced. The mechanics I spoke to about doing the work were far from excited about it. The last thing i wanted was someone pissing and moaning their way through major work on my new car.

Agreed - buying the 18 was the easiest way to make sure I had a simple buying process - buy and drive. No head gasket issues, plus the updated suspension and front differential.

Thank you everyone for your replys. The main reason I lean towards the 2018 is the lack of the HG issue. My preferred color is NB but second would be RR. I dont think im that mechanically inclined to install a diff.
TBH I will prob wait 2 weeks for a 2018 to pop up if it doesnt Ill just grab a clean 2017 for less money and be just fine.

When I bought my 18 in late February of 2018, I was strictly looking at 18s to avoid the HG issues, but also because I wanted the exclusivity of the 18. It was also a steal compared to the black Subaru WRX STI Type RA I had preordered and planned on buying in April/May - $51.5k, they then asked me if I wanted it for $46k after it sat there for 3 months at $55k.

Both suspension revisions were minor and inexpensive. The ride is harsh in an 18 if you're just driving around. You don't notice it when you're really pushing the car, but cruising down the highway or sitting in traffic, you will. I'm not complaining about it, I wanted RACECAR. But my wife refuses to get in the thing because it's so harsh.

The LSD was a selling point to me beyond the black roof and mirrors. However, In speaking with the owner and instructor of a local race school, Go4It racing, he had his choice of 17 or 18, and went 17 to save the money as he couldn't tell the difference with it installed and not. I couldn't because I'm a newb and it would be meaningless coming from me. But hearing it from him gives it credibility.

How you plan on using this car should definite what you buy in my opinion. If you're planning on buying the car, enjoying it for 2-3 years as a DD, just save the money and get the 17. Long term purchase where you be putting 2-5k miles on it a year in optimal conditions, get the 18. My thought process was 1) I'm keeping it stock. 2) I plan on putting 5-9k miles a year on it in mostly optimal conditions and driving my wife's Rav4 as much as possible for 3-4 years, then buying something else as a DD to beat on and dropping my RS mileage to 2-5k miles a year. 3) light track duty 1-4x a year (did 1 day in it last year). 4) I have ADD and even though I love the car, may look to sell it in a 12-36 months for something else and wanted something that has potential to hold it's value. There's like 3 $15k cars I want to buy right now and boss lady says NO NO NO!!!!

With that said, I could be persuaded to part with my stock 2018 NB RS with 10.5k miles (no sunroof). It's not posted anywhere for sale, I don't need to sell it and I absolutely LOVE the car, but would like to cut my expenses a bit as my wife and I just bought a house and my job continues to jerk me around with promotions. Would also like to get on the track more and a used Miata is far more cost effective then having to insure the RS for a day on the track.

The youtube guy with that had the RR with a few bolt-ons got great money for his car. As a result, a lot of 18s popped up for sale for $37k+.

Looking at Cargurus.com and doing a nationwide search for all Focus RSs: The lowest cost RS is a 2016 black with 34k miles for $25k with a couple of other examples available with 30-50k miles for under $30k. There's a 2018 NB with a salvage title in UT for like $30k. It looked pretty bad when I google searched the vin and saw the post accident pictures. When you get into that $30-33k range, you're going to find some lower mileage (10-20k mi). On the other end of the spectrum, there's 4 18s listed, 3 blue and 1 RR all listed for either $37k or $40k and with 5-10k miles. Sorry, I love to do market analysis on these things!

Iv got a 2018 RR without the moon roof. I'd entertain the idea of selling it. Currently has 14k miles that will be going up since I daily drive it.

I've added a jbr short throw shifter and solid bushings.

Windows are tinted and it has ZL1 rock guards, Weather tech floor mats, and a Ford carbon shift knob.

Currently under warranty until 32k

I just ordered the tune+ 350 package but haven't had the balls to plug it in and void the powertrain warranty..

Hi. May I ask where you are located? Thinking of selling my 2018 Nb with 5300 miles. Completey stock with two sets of tires and all options.

Not sure if you bought it yet or not. Talked to some guys at the RS track day - they said they couldn't really tell the difference between the suspension. So I'd say I'd focus on if you need the LSD or not.

Wish he had offered it for sale but oh well I guess.
I have been wanting a 2018 NB too. I see several for sale unfortunately for me none nearby. I am lucky though a already have a RR. I should have bought a NB also.
