No reverse lights or camera (goes back to the radio) when letting the clutch out while in reverse

Has anyone else experienced this and had it resolved?

My Ford dealer says they never heard of it before me, but has a suggested fix that the extended warranty company I have has approved with a caveat.

IF replacing the Body Control Module fixes the issue, they will cover all warranty costs.
If it doesn't fix the problem I'm on the hook for 280$ labour and 950$ for the unit, which a competitor dealer has in stock but is worldwide back ordered otherwise.

Side question. I have the DSC controller, please tell me that isn't the BCM.

Thanks!

Do you mean that it goes back to radio when you fully release the clutch and rear is engaged?

For me the camera keeps operating even after I'm in neutral and even in first up to maybe 3-5 MPH going forward. I also have a DSC controller and it has had no effect on the reverse camera behavior but since they both use the CAN bus, it's possible if one goes bad to have an effect on others.
If the car is in reverse and I slowly lift the clutch the camera stays on until about 3 inches off the floor, at that point there's an audible click in the cabin, the reverse camera reverts to the radio screen, and the reverse lights shut off (according to ford). If I depress the clutch all the way down, the camera comes back on and it can be cycled endlessly between the 2 states.

Ford claims to have tested the wires leading to the BCM and insists its the BCM, but the warranty company still insists on that caveat. I was only concerned about the DSC because I wasn't sure what the BCM was. Now i know its under the passenger foot-well, so it likely isn't the DSC.

I almost never drive long enough in reverse to fully lift the clutch but the few times I've done it I believe that the rear camera is still on. I'll check tomorrow if it's still on in neutral after it's been in reverse and the clutch fully released
My shifter never leaves reverse, the only thing I do is engaged and disengage the clutch.

When the reverse switch is engaged, pin 31 in connector C1926B at the PCM is grounded. Looks like the PCM communicates that over the CAN to the BCM that controls the reversing lamp relay you are likely hearing. But, I think the PCM also communicates that to the IPIM to activate the reverse camera on the dash. Because both the reverse lamps and the camera are affected, I would think the BCM is less likely the issue. I looked a bit deeper into the camera and there is also a LIN from the BCM to the rear camera, so it could be the BCM. But unless they have confirmed with their IDS that the PCM is still sending the data that reverse is active when the lamps go out and the camera turns off, I would not approve the BCM replacement.

My first thing would be to do the shifter cable reset procedure, just to make sure that it is not just barely engaging the reverse switch just slight enough that when the gears get loaded as power is transferred through the clutch it's moving something just enough to deactivating the reverse switch.

If the issue persists after the shift cable reset, test that the previously mentioned pin at the PCM is staying grounded while backing up.

If not, I would put a test jumper in where the reversing switch is, if the problem persists, it's in the wiring or the PCM. If it works with the jumper though, likely need a new reversing switch.

The camera remaining on is a delay setting in the sync3 settings you can toggle on or off.

Thanks so much. I will use these notes to discuss what they did to determine the BCM was the issue (they did specifically say they tested wire continuity in and out of the BCM), and whether they investigated the shift cable and/or performed a reset.

I read off your list word for word, and they said you sound like a smart guy, and they followed basically every procedure you mentioned except for the cable reset. There is still no resolution however as "no one is paying for diagnostics to be completed" with a warranty claim. Which I explained wasn't my problem, the warranty company assumes risk by selling a warranty and they need to figure it out. So with that said, they said they will call me next week after talking to the shop manager. In the mean time I'm driving around with no reverse camera(don't care) and no reverse lights (do care).

Will post with more info when I have it.
This is one of those cases where having ForScan so you can monitor somethings on the CAN network would be of use to help diagnose the issue. I know it's not your job, but I've gotten to the point over the years that if I care about something and want to know the job is done right, I do it myself. I own the FSM and Electrical manuals for 9 of 11 cars here at the house, the two I don't are my wife's. I wouldn't say that I'm smart, I just have the information resources here to find the information.

Update: It's been over a week since I spoke to the Ford Service Adviser, they asked for a week to sort things out, and I still haven't heard back from them regarding my warranty claim and now my Hill Assist isn't functioning.
