Sup all, glad to finally have an RS that I purchased in late January. Definitely been a story with this dream car already, barely put over 1k miles since purchase. Hopefully looking for this story to get better sooner than later at this point lol. Local to CO Springs. The RS though is currently down...
So, I got this RS from a dealer with 47k miles. I'm totally new to the RS world. It's got an Air Ride Performance kit and a Cobb Tuner. Other than those it's pretty much stock. I was a bit skeptical on purchasing this since it had a Cobb tuner and the dealer had not idea of previous owner's modifications or tune. Base inspections of the car itself, there were no aftermarket intakes, intercoolers, motor mounts, or anything super noticeable of performance mods. I wasn't looking to drop into someone's project really, but they gave me a deal and I dropped into it. The test drive felt good no odd sounds from engine or drivetrain, seemed to be perfect at the time.
Happy as could be driving around, I was being a bit timid with the new car not hammering on it just enjoying the car! But then I began noticing small bits at about 700 miles since driving off the lot. First was I got a chattering sound at Low RPM (1.8K-3K RPM)nwhen accelerating. Becomes more noticeable when going up an incline from low RPM, accelerating I could feel a slight vibration in the wheel with the sound of the chattering in the wheel. The chatter and vibration would dissipate to a point when past at about 4 RPM or so. The same chatter would also happen when engine braking down a long steep hill, would be good for about a minute engine braking downhill (light on brakes), but when the chattering start it was loud and constant until clutch was pushed in. Led me to believe something with drive train was going on.Chatter Sound
Second thing I noticed, was when I got more comfortable with the RS, I began pushing the RS a little more and more and found that there was a loud squeal at about 4K RPM on WOT, boost. It only lasts like a quick second then dissipates. I never notice any loss of boost pressure on the access port but tweaked me a little of having that sound on WOT moments.
I've also noticed with the access port, BAT voltage is never really consistent. It always fluctuates from 14.5v-10.6v at idle and driving. Seems when its hanging around 13.5v-10.6v, on most cases of engine decel, it would go back up to 14.5 or 14.3, but not all the time. Seeing the voltage at 10.6 is what concerns me the most. Just haven't got to throw a voltmeter on it to see accuracy of access port. The RS starts Strongs every day though, so I never really looked into it further.
Even with these little things, drivability wise the RS has been strong. I eventually went back to dealer service for the problems since its still new and this is what dealer said.
The chattering was due to the transfer case. Fluid was really metallic. Suspected past owner may have used Launch Control often. Warranty was going to cover a new transfer case.
The squealing on WOT though is something I'm hoping someone here can answer. Dealer said the squeal is a "Normal" wastegate sound. I've had some boosted vehicles in the past, had nothing similar to this. Is this true? Then the BAT voltage was never really addressed, not sure what happened.
Anyway, pushing forward to fixing my bigger issue of that chatter with vibration. They replaced my T-Case TODAY, went out for a test drive to see if they can recreate the problem anddddddd they apparently blew my motor on that test drive..... reported they heard a loud pop, followed by smoke form exhaust, and heavy vibration in the RS. I'm going out to the shop tomorrow to see whats up, never in my life had I had a service shop mess up vehicle to that point.. Super skeptical with this dealer now..
Now I'm RS'less and just want to rant about this particular experience. I love the RS, just driving around the block calms nerves for me. Maybe you guys have some insight on those base problems I had. I looked around the form for some of those problems but couldn't find anything definitive for answers. Some of those posts I found too, were from years back.
Anyhoo, glad to be here and have an RSish. Hoping if I can get everything straightened out I can meet with FOCUS locals in CO Springs!
