Fuel/Gas Smell coming through Vents on Startup

Hi folks,

I picked up 2017 RS that had already gotten the HG fix done at the dealership. It didn't start till a couple days after, but now from a cold start (eg sitting overnight, or sitting at the garage while I'm at work), it blows a heavy gas/fuel smell through the fans for quite a while. (15-20 minutes of driving)

Has anyone else run into this or might know what's going on? No mods, under 300 miles; not driving hard at all.

One potential thought I had was that the car wasn't warming up fully. The drive commute is about 25 minutes long and it doesn't reach full operating temp till about 10-15 minutes into that. Is it leaving unburnt fuel in the lines?

Thanks! Excited to be a part of the group.

Burnt fuel or unburnt? Could be gasket to turbo if it smells like burnt fuel. If un burnt the first place I would look is the High Pressure Fuel Pump and the fuel tube to the injector rail. Perhaps the dealer didn't replace the fuel tube as required to do this job and it has cracked, or simply was not properly torqued.

Get this looked at ASAP. If you give it a visual and find raw fuel leaking that could be really dangerous and I would have it towed in.

The tech who worked on my HG must have splashed gas around as the car stank like fuel for a few days. It got in the AC system, which worried me as I wasn't sure if he got fuel inside. It all went away after a few days.

Call the dealer and ask what they replaced with the HG. I got my HG done right after the amendment came out for the fuel tube, so I had to take it back the next time I could get off of work during the week. Took 45 minutes to wrap it up on the second visit.

If your dealer did the HG without those parts (fuel tube and HPFP bolts) I would not use them as they didn't follow the WSM as directed by the recall. While the recall neglected to initially ID them as needed parts the WSM clearly shows they must also be replaced due to being discard on removal parts. So, the amendment was just to clear up to dealers that those parts are also covered under the recall.

I get an exhaust smell in the cabin on startup for about 10 seconds. I never really thought much of it since it goes right away and doesn't seem to come back when the car is otherwise idling at a stop. But maybe it's those very fumes that keep making me forget to ask about it at the dealership...

@ControlNode I agree, but with my work schedule I was only able to leave the car with them for the hard stuff back in February and the fuel tube was backordered then. The tech gave me the option of doing the FSA then without the fuel tube, or wait for everything. My schedule only allowed for the former, so that's what I went with.

Oddly enough, I only got the fuel stink after the fuel tube was replaced. The outside of the car was filthy after the initial HG swap, but the engine bay was squeaky clean (minus some coolant on the PTU). Not even scratches on the subframe by the "front" of the engine with the belts that many peeps here have complained about.
