This is as close as he got. Grid line up was by previous lap times.

This car rips at the track

Do you think it would have been a different story if he started ahead of you and you were trying to chase and overtake him? I've driven a 2013 GT-R and it is ton's faster than the RS in a straight line. Not sure about the relative performance of the 2 cars on the corners of a track. Can you comment on if the RS seemed to pull away from the GT-R around the corners?

He said the line up was by lap times, so he beat him on straight up lap times too.

Wow that is incredible if these cars can beat a GT-R's lap times. After driving the 2013 GT-R I really, really wanted it. But then I came to my senses and started looking for a "poor man's GT-R" and ended up with the Focus RS. Looking forward to experiencing it on the track first hand. You got my anticipation up!

There's no way the RS comes close to keeping up with the GT-R with the same drivers and experience. In the corners it might match it but not exceed it, at least at higher speeds. What makes the GT-R so awesome it its handling which surprised the experts when it came out. The RS handles phenomenally but just doesn't have the power. It certainly a fun car though.

Fairly certain no one here believes the RS beats a GTR with the same driver.

However, I do believe the RS is most likely easier to drive fast and to its limits. GTR gets to the pucker factor much more quickly I'd imagine. :)

Yeah. No. Sorry. As great of a handling car as the RS is sure to be, it's not going to be on the same planet in the straights or corners as the GT-R. That being said, I'm tired of paying for brakes and tires on my GT-R after a few track days. The ratio of price:lap time doesn't work out in the GT-R's favor, but my bone stock 2009 GT-R can outpace actual race cars pretty easily for a few laps. Fun story though.

You and the driver of the GT-R did not have the same ability. Here is the Top Gear test track results

Focus RS 1:26:44
Nissan GTR 01:17:8

That is almost 10 seconds on a single lap................. You can say you beat a amateur driver in a GT-R all you want but the Focus RS is not faster than a GT-R

if he misses a gear, you lose. if he can't drive, you lose. if you're fast and he's slow, you lose. if you take the checkered flag, you lose. the only way that you can win is by losing and being a close second!

I think the point the OP was making with the thread was that the RS is a potent car that can and will surprise some super car owners. A better driver in an RS stands a chance to beat, and has shown it can by way of this thread, when in the right hands versus an average driver in a GTR etc.
This is something the hot hatch has been doing for years; taking on cars it shouldn't beat, and surprising the bejeezus out of the driver in the other car. He wasn't starting a thread claiming the RS is superior to a GTR.

One thing I can say about the GT-R is that it inspires confidence. This is something the RS is said to do as well. On the track, it is the drivers job to work the vehicle to it's maximum potential. On the street potential doesn't come into play as much as drivers ability to push beyond their comfort level and keep it there. I think the RS will have the ability to leave many mountain carvers in the dust. There are something's that can not be measured and that is one, how the vehicle helps the driver become a better one. Rhythm is key and on a track your sense of speed is lowered where on the street, the opposite happens.

My point just being the RS will make a great fun track car but won't be the ACR of hot hatches. If your ego gets shamed the RS is said to be extremely fast and almost untouchable on a mountain road. I don't condone racing on the street but I'm sure if you come across a chap in a vehicle that outguns the RS you should atleast be able to keep up with him on a canyon run, or maybe even pull away :). Goes back to the driver as always, but it is a lot harder to extract that performance on the street then it is the track and the RS is said to let the driver to be able to do that any where.
