2019 Ford Edge ST essentials: Fast but lacking ... something

The 2019 Edge ST is Ford’s new sporty midsize crossover, gaining the ST badge and the recently introduced 2.7-liter twin-turbo Ecoboost motor making a healthy 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.

I've sat in one, nice SUV but definitely not worthy of the ST badge. The shift paddles are atrocious; no manual, no DCT, it's a torque converter I think? Absolutely unacceptable for an ST vehicle. I also remember savagegeese pointed out in his review video that the transmission is terrible, that the gearing is very strange and awkward. IMHO I think the exhaust openings are ugly but overall looks good.

I'm just worried that this is the first step of Ford taking the path of BMW M and Merc AMG, i.e. going from a brand of great status and repute, dedicated to making unique thrilling vehicles for people who are passionate about cars and enjoy driving, to a status symbol brand. I used to like AMG a lot, until the AMG badge started losing its value, with joke products like G63.65, C43, the best or nothing, my *ss. Now they're everywhere, your next door lady has one, the annoying douchebag down the street has one, and just about any asian international student drives one and doesn't give two sh*ts about cars. Even more so with BMW M, not only it's a performance parts bin but also they're not all exclusive to M cars, BMW started putting M cosmetic or less relevant parts on regular cars and still slap an M badge on there. They used to be sports cars with luxury amenities, now they're just luxury cars with lots of power.

It's understandable that Ford would want to go down this route as this is highly profitable, but I would argue it's a sellout. Following this Edge ST I heard about the new Focus "ST-line", which gets the ST looks without the power, and no ST badging thankfully. But this is still very alarming as it's a sign that Ford is going down this sellout route.

I think one needs to drive something before knowing anything. The RS reviews were null and void to me after I drove it. Likely this ST is the same way. Drive it and look at it as a sum of its’ parts. I would do the same as I did with the Focus. Drive base model first, ST, then RS. Same with Edge. Edge is a DD, road trip machine, with lots of passenger and cargo room. I will drive one when market cools just like I did with the RS. Discounted down in the 40k range I bet it is quite good.

Don't worry, scrote. There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick-ass lives. My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now.

The problem with the Edge ST is that it's in a weird value position, for 50k you can get a loaded Passport or Highlander hybrid. For this car, just like ours, you have to want THIS car versus something else. There's not many around, so if you do get one you'll likely to see another one in the same parking lot.

edit: Don't forget the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the turbodiesel or Hemi. Sorry Ford, if in the market I'm looking there first well before the Edge.

Will it get people in the door to a Ford dealership? Probably based on its spec sheet alone. Will people walk out with one? Who knows. At this point it's worth waiting for the Bronco or Ranger Raptor if you don't need a car within the next 6-12 months.

If you buy one, drive it hard. Because thrills like these don’t happen often.

    Now a Explorer ST:

Here's How the Ford Explorer ST Ended Up with Mercedes-Spec Tires

Why are the Mercedes-AMG GLE43 coupe's "Mercedes Original" Michelin tires optional on Ford's new performance SUV? We found out.

I read a little about the upcoming Explorer ST. C&D is anticipating good things about it due to its new, longitudinal-engined chassis layout.
