Here's what they did. Apparently the head tech checked is confident the timing is correct, but they are still getting an error and are talking to Ford about it. Picked it up and waiting to hear back. Drove it about 50km and it seems back to normal.

I will keep an eye on it see if it happens when I drop below half a tank.
It hasn't been doing it for the last few days but my tank has been mostly full, see if it happens when I drop below half.
Not for the 2.3L engine. This applies to the 2.0L regular Focus engine (as the next post stated after your's with far less words than mine, but maybe a little more cryptically).

I had an intermittent sputter on cold starts after the HG fix. It eventually threw a CEL for multiple misfires on startup. a certain amount of misfires is allowed before the CEL comes on but this was more than that threshhold I guess. It turned out to be a faulty injector. The injector was replaced after the dealership spoke with Ford engineering.

Anyway that was done in the summer and the car started smoothly up until recently when it started to sputter a few times on startup again. Not enough to trigger the CEL though. I thought "oh no not again!" I normally use Shell VPower gas but I read somewhere about possible problems with EcoBoost engines and Shell winter blend? Interestingly, I switched to Petrol Canada gas for the last 4 fill ups and the sputters have stopped.

Oh boy, I've never owned an EcoBoost before but I always get V-power from Shell for my Saab and no issues whatsoever over many years...will have to monitor.

Interesting, I always use Shell as well. Are you using Ultra 94 at Petrol Canada?

I use 91 octane. I've read mixed reviews of Petrol Can 94.

Certain brands of gas are ****tier than other or have additives included that may not agree with the car. Especially us stuck with ****ty cali 91 gas.
