    Rough Cold Start HELP!!

I know this topic has been discussed many times and I’ve read them over and over. However, I seem to be in a bad position with my dealer regarding the issue. As many of you may have figured out by the title, my rs idles very rough when cold starting it in the morning, some morning are worse than others, but I have noticed it occurring almost every morning. I brought the car to the dealer and they performed a visual inspection despite me requesting that they run diagnostics to check the timing. The dealer untimely said based on their visual inspection that the car is running fine and is acting normally. I feel as if I am backed into a corner where they are telling me it is normal however everything I have read and know about cars tells me it is not normal. I guess at this point I’m looking for any advice at all as to whether it is normal and if not what steps do I take next? I already called fords customer service and they won’t do anything since “all dealers are independently owned and dealers have their own rights to determine the protocol for repairing a vehicle”

Here are a few videos of my cold start.

    Hi @JCozza ,

    to focusrs.org

What model and year is your RS?
Are you head-gasket affected? Sounds like it could need a new headgasket.

Did you install a thumper cam?

Has your head gasket been replaced yet under the recall?

hmm, my car sounds very much like that at idle when first started(the lumpiness, not the spitting), and have not had any problems with it. How long is your commute?

I had an old bmw that spit like that - it was not driven much and had water condensing in the exhaust that did not vaporize off since the exhaust never got that hot.

@Paolo It is a 2016 rs1 I bought it used with 150 miles on it in March, @onestep they already performed the recall before I purchased the car.

@nphobb01 that’s the thing I don’t drive it far all the times, my work is only 8 minutes away (about 3 miles) and School is about the same, so I’m not driving too far all the time. I will say that it doesn’t always spit it was just spitting on that occasion because it rained all night.

So they are unwilling to perform the diagnostic testing to confirm the timing is correct or off?

So pretty much your dealer is unfriendly and not helpful at all?
Jerk move unless there is more behind this.
and that dealer you purchased it from did the HG work themselves?

It seems this needs to be done, to rule it out once and for all and it sounds like they will want you to $$ for the time to do so?
If that's the case I'd find another dealer to do the work, and if it comes back bad have Ford eat it all as part of the FSA, and you will likely be sent back to them.
Worst case your out a couple of hours $$ but at least you've ruled it out and perhaps found a dealer/tech that will help...?

@jjameson yes, that is correct they told me that the car is running normal based on there visual inspection thus there is no need to run a diagnosis on the timing. If I wanted to get it done I would have to pay out of pocket for it. I called corporate and talked to a supervisor and they won’t do anything about it either.

I would try a different Ford dealership in the area to see what they say.

Something I also just thought of, it might pass the dealership visual inspection because it is already warmed up and the symptoms are gone by the time you drive it there. If you can maybe leave it at dealership overnight and have them do a visual inspection first thing in the morning.

@KiloMikeAlfa they have kept my car there for three days, they have heard the noise, but they insist that it is a “normal characteristic of the engine”
