RS vs R On the fence

I am reading about the head gasket issues these engines are having and it is steering me towards the Golf R. Just read about another blown engine in FB group. How common is this?

The truthful answer is that nobody really knows. It seems a lot more common than most are comfortable with. But it's still very difficult to get anything close to real failure numbers. A lot of RS's have zero issues. Those are the people you don't necessarily hear from. A lot of people only post when there's an issue. Either way, the problem is definitely real. The big question is how many are or will be affected.

    @USA ,

    to focusrs.org

    Great question.

The incidence of engine failures and head gasket issue are of concern but are not as prevalent as one may think.

As with all engines, there's a risk of failure hence the warranty. What can't be determined is long term ownership and the incidence of engine failures / HG issues.

However, i wouldn't be using this as reason not to purchase a RS because when the engine is on song the car can do things that many other cars can dream of.

As always YMMV, but if buying new the MY17 have less occurrence of engine faults.

But then again, how long is a piece of string?

    Good luck.

RS vs R On the fence

I struggled with the same thing, ultimately got a RS. I bought the extended warranty up to 8 yr 125k for just over $1000. That set my mind at ease. If my engine blows, Ford can buy me a new one.

On the other hand if you plan to mod or tune your engine, I would recommend the Golf.

Edit: a few people have asked about my plan. I got it from @GreatWhiteBuffalo on this forum. He has a thread called Ford Extended Service Plan Pricing. It looks like prices have increased and now my plan would cost $1530 with the rental and lighting delete and the maximum $200 deductible. Still probably worth it if you plan to keep the car a long time without mods. It is also transferable to a new owner so could increase resale value for a buyer worried about engine issues.

@USA , I think the problem of the head gasket is not as large as it seems on this forum. I have a LE2018 Race Red RS on order and I am not concerned about the head gasket problem. I also know a lot about both cars the Golf R and the Focus RS. I currently have a 2016 Golf R and I plan to keep both when the 2018 RS arrives. Each car, RS and R, has its advantages and disadvantages. I am getting the RS because it puts a bigger smile on my face; it is raw, raucous, stiff and faster.

Good Luck on your decision; it is a hard one. ....but you need to decide what factors are most important to you!

A bit off topic, but does anyone know how many Golf Rs have had engine issues?

We don't even accurately know how many RS's have had engine issues, not sure why we would know the same about R's.

Was curious for those that frequent the VW forums (I don't). Obviously we cannot know the real statistics as the manufacturers would never post them.
