    The Official Oil Thread

    Okay, every good forum has to have an oil thread. This is it.

    As we all know, our RS's require 5W-50. If you go into your local Walmart, Autozone or O'Reilly's auto parts store, you will not find ANY 5W-50 oil. NAPA can order a few. So there must be alternatives.

    First, not all oils of the same *advertised* weight are equal. You might have a 0W-40 from one manufacturer that is "thicker" than a 5W-50 from another. So if you want to compare apples to apples you have to look at the oil specifications of viscosity and also HTHS (High Temperature High Shear). Viscosity is measured in centistokes (CsT). The higher the number, the thicker the oil. HTHS is a rating that determines the oil's stability in a high temperature, high stress conditions. The higher number the better.

    Here is a list of oils that I could find, and the cheapest prices I could find and US retailers for 5W-50 oils:

    Motorcraft synthetic, O'Reilly Auto Parts, $10.19/qt
    Castrol Edge synthetic, O'Reilly Auto Parts, $9.19/qt
    Mobil 1, Amazon.com, $51.56 for 6 quarts and free shipping ($8.59/qt)
    Redline, Redline.com, $51.95/gal (12.99/qt)

    Easy alternative:
    Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, Walmart, $19.57/gal

    For what it's worth, based on this data, MY choice is the Redline 5W-40. It has relatively low viscosity when cold (<100), higher viscosity when hot (>15), and a good HTHS (~4.5). Although the 5W-50 oils have great viscosity when hot, they are all just too damned thick to pump at lower temps, and for a daily driver, that's not acceptable to me.

    Wow, 5W-50 is quite pricey. Looking at your info and some looking, I would have to go with Mobil 1 5W-50, looks pretty solid? What do you suggest?

    I'll probably go 0W-50 since I live in Texas and is way easier to find and from a good brand (Rotella). It's what I use in my current car.

    I'll probably use Mobil 1 5w-50 also. Had good luck with it in the past, I jus won't use their oil filters as they are too restrictive and can cause oil starvation issues (had it happen in my S2000).

    I plan to use AMSOIL 5w-50 due to having good luck with it in the past. but at 11.50/qt its not cheap and its a pain in the ass to get locally, but advanced planing makes that a non issue

    my local walmart carries synthetic 5w-50 in a few flavors, Mobil 1, penzoil and quakerstate. I'm positive availability is not universal, so gotta go and see for yourself.

    The First Official Oil Thread - 5W-50 and its alternatives

    Good thread. I'll consider sticking this so we don't get 200 similar threads.

    As far as me, I'm going with RedLine but not sure if I should stick to the recommended 5-50 or go down to 5-40. The 5-50 seems to be perfect for those looking for a alternative to motorcraft. It's very close in property. My biggest concern is that for me, my most common drive is going to be to the office and that's about 2 miles away from me. Not enough to get the car up to full operating temps so oil like 5-50 might not be the best idea. At the same time I would hate to deal with draining the oil and changing every time I want to go to the track. When I track I won't have anything other than the manufacturer recommended thickness.

    Lymerock, given your geographic location you should consider a lower viscosity oil, especially if you're daily driving in the winter. The Amsoil 5W-50 is pretty darn thick at lower temps, and although it has very good high temp viscosity and HTHS, you can get almost the same performance from the Mobil 1, and save some money in the process. You'll have to be a little more specific on your driving style, distances, and what seasons you'll be driving.

    Just to post a small word of caution. We have yet to see if Ford's recommendations for oil in different markets will be different. In the Fiesta ST they are different. Additionally, Motorcraft's oil is API service rating SN. This may be much more important than viscosity. Some of the oils mentioned are not. I think changing to any other oil than the factory recommended may be premature at this time.

    I'll be sticking with the 5W-50. I'm not going to risk the different parasitic flow losses with heavier or lighter weight oils. I didn't design the engine, so I'm fairly certain Ford's more qualified to tell me what oil to use

    Later down the road, if someone finds a healthy alternative, then maybe. But for now, I'll pay to play and get the Castrol or the Mobil 1
