Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Myth: debunked

So, several months ago before I even got my car, I had seen posts going around about tread life for the SC2s. I made a comment on it and several people had told me that I would be very lucky to get 5k miles out of them. I've had a tire salesman tell me he's never seen one last more than 3k, and just about everywhere I look seems to think the same thing.

Apparently, this is not true. I currently have 4k miles on my SC2s and I still have 6mm+ of tread left. I've driven all the way from Texas and I drive incredibly sporty (but safely) just about everywhere I go. I've always said that if you're not sliding your car around like a yahoo, your tread is going to be fine.

So don't be worried about tread life with the SC2s, they will last a lot longer than 3k miles if you take care of them. I'm betting I can take em to 10k+ and I'll update this thread when I do.

Never before has the expression YMMV been more appropriate. If you track the Cup 2's hard, your mileage will be far, far less than "sporty" street use.

Probably true, I remember mentioning explicitly not tracking hard though. Hmm.. I'll have to find my post. Doesn't matter anyway I suppose, point is- you can get good mileage out of em when the general consensus was that those were track only tires that you'd need to replace every ~3 months (from my admittedly anecdotal experience).

Still though, I think the main thing when tracking is don't slide your car if you want your tires to survive. You shouldn't lose more than 2/32 of a tire in a given track day. If you do, your times probably aren't as good as they could be and you're probably sliding a lot. Then again, I'm not a professional race driver or anything.

I saw this thread and I had to get something from my car. I decided to inspect my tires and look what I found. Looks like the tire is holding pressure and hopefully it can be fixed. Is it a good idea to go to the dealer or any tire place? Tires have about 2600 miles.

If you have an America's Tire near you they will take it out and patch it for free if it needs to be patched.

I dont think we have Americas Tire here, so I think I'll take it to the dealer. There is a tire place near where I live, but Im not sure if going there will be as good as the dealer.

6,100 miles and two AutoX events on the original set of Cup 2's that came with the car so far. I suspect they may not have life left in them after time out at Texas World Speedway's road course in a few weeks though.

6k into mine and I have roughly 3/16th over the wear bar still. Just waiting for warmer weather again, they do not like the cold.
