The Subaru WRX’s most recent complete overhaul only debuted in the 2015 model year, but fans are constantly looking forward to what’s next for the*rally-bred legend. As reported by motoring.com.au, the WRX will get a mid-cycle refresh for 2018, and*a wholly new car won’t arrive until around 2020.

Thoughts of a brand-new WRX have*been stirred by the debut of the new Subaru Global Platform that underpins the new Subaru Impreza. By continuing as a derivative of the former Impreza, the WRX now, technically, has the model-specific architecture that had been rumored for 2015. The Global Platform will eventually underpin every Subaru, but according to an engineer quoted by Motoring, there’s not enough time to properly work it onto*a new WRX for 2018.

“The full model cycle will be about four or five years,” the unnamed source told Motoring. “2018 will be a facelift only. It’s not the cost, but everything goes through a production cycle. You can’t shorten that production cycle, there’s many things to consider such as durability testing and likewise. It’s not as simple as taking the turbo engine out of one car and presto, off you go . . . You’re talking about complete suspension tune and a development team. It’s a big process.”

That doesn’t mean people won’t be sad about waiting until 2019 or 2020 for a new one. Perhaps by then, the company will have found a way to infuse it with more power than the 268 horsepower generated by the turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four in the WRX and the 305 horsepower made by the turbo 2.5-liter in the STI. Subaru wouldn’t confirm or deny*the media report.

Came here from there, won't be going back.
My recent experience with Subaru of America service (not dealer) has not been good.
Had 2015 WRX, not pleased. Design compromises mostly centered around MPG ratings.

Hmph so no "new" WRXs for another 3-4 years? I dont have any issues with this, if they need to take their time to put out a great car then so be it. With the competition in this category they will need to put out a solid car.

^ I agree. It'll only benefit us. I'm not loyal to any brand, either.

WRX and STI are separate lines now. It's the STI that's due for a 'redesign' not the WRX. This article is kind of silly even talking about a redesigned wrx.

No, it is the WRX that is separate from the Impreza. The STi is treated as a trim level of the WRX, which is the model. This article's use of WRX refers to both the base model and the STi "trim" as a facelift would apply to both.

derp, you're correct on that point randman.

My point remains, a 'redesign' is nowhere near for the 2.0L DIT WRX, it's definitely due for the ancient 2.5L in the STI though.

    WRX STI for 2018
A comprehensive handling enhancement for the 2018 STI includes the revised suspension tuning as featured on the WRX, plus a revised DCCD AWD system, significantly upgraded brakes and this model’s first-ever 19-inch wheels. The DCCD system, which previously used a combination of mechanical and electronic center limited slip differential control, now uses electronic control for quicker and smoother response. The 19-inch alloy wheels feature a striking Y-shaped spoke design and carry 245/35R19 tires that help raise cornering performance while giving the STI an even more aggressive stance.

The yellow-painted brake calipers identify a significantly upgraded Brembo Performance Brake System that now uses stronger monoblock 6-piston calipers in front, monoblock 2-piston calipers in the rear and larger, drilled rotors all around for better heat dissipation. New brake pads provide significantly greater surface area for improved braking feel and fade resistance. The STI also offers the Recaro seats (standard on STI Limited, optional for base trim).

Powered by a 305-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine, the WRX STI brings rally-bred performance technology to the road with Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Standard handling technologies include Active Torque Vectoring and Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control.

All about other things and nothing about the dinosaur engine.
    No thnx...
